The Defense Department along with Sonitus Technologies are developing a powerful and compact communications device that mounts on your back teeth. The Air Force is calling it the “Molar Mic” and it functions almost anywhere — under water, in free-fall and while the user is wearing a full face mask.
Initial tests are underway and early models were tested during last year’s Hurricane Harvey rescues.
There’s a mouthpiece, which is custom fit for each user, the mouthpiece uses bone conduction to transmit the incoming sounds directly to the inner ear. The mouthpiece is outfitted with a waterproof mic, which lets the user communicate while speaking normally.
The Military Times has more on the new Molar Mic technology.
