A new report from the South China Morning Post today said Hong Kong is positioning itself to be one of the first widespread adopters of 5G. Once spectrum allocation decisions are made by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations body, when the World Radiocommunication Conference in 2019, local officials say they are ready for widespread commercial deployment in 2020.
Hong Kong IT sector representative Charles Mok said 5G rollout on existing 4G-LTE networks will happen quickly after decisions are made about worldwide 5G spectrum.
“The ITU announcement will be just a formality because where the industry is going is pretty certain,” he told the South China Morning Post.
